How to do an online home inventory for your move

On MoveFinder you list what you're moving online instead of booking a home survey visit. A complete inventory means quotes that fit your real move - and no company has to drive out to look round your home first.

Why list your home online?

A removal quote depends on how much you're moving, how easy it is to get in and out, and how long the job will take. Traditionally a company sends someone round to survey your home. With an online inventory you describe it yourself, in your own time, and every company you compare quotes from the same list.

It also cuts out the car journeys that survey visits take - companies quote without driving to your home first.

Go room by room

MoveFinder groups items by room - such as living room, kitchen, bedroom, office, and garden, garage and loft. Work through each room in turn and count everything that needs carrying: furniture, appliances, boxes, bikes and garden furniture.

If you haven't packed yet, estimate the boxes for each room. It's better to over-estimate slightly than to have a company arrive with too small a van.

Things people forget

  • The loft, the shed and the garage
  • Under-stairs cupboards and built-in wardrobes
  • Garden furniture, plant pots and children's outdoor toys
  • Bikes, prams and sports kit
  • Anything stored at someone else's house or in a storage unit

Access matters as much as items

These are the things a surveyor would look at, so add them for both addresses:

  • The type of property and which floor you're on
  • Stairs only, or a lift - and whether the lift is big enough for furniture
  • Where the van can park and how far it is from the door
  • Steep slopes, steps, narrow streets or gates

Dismantling and packing

Mark the items that need taking apart - beds, wardrobes, large tables - and say whether you'd like the company to pack for you or you'll pack yourself. Point out anything very fragile, valuable or unusually heavy.

If something changes

If you add items or your access changes after you've had quotes, update your move so the quotes match it. Prices can change until you book.
