Parking for the removal van
Ask the borough the address is in - and if your old and new homes are in different boroughs, ask both. Councils need notice for a parking bay suspension and charge for it, so apply as early as you can. On a red route, stopping is tightly restricted: check the signs and contact TfL well before moving day if the van needs to load there.
- Your London borough council: London has 32 borough councils, and each runs parking on its own streets
- City of London Corporation: the Square Mile - the City of London itself
- Transport for London (TfL): red routes - the main roads marked with red lines
Planning a move in London
Controlled parking zones
Many London streets are in controlled parking zones (CPZs). If yours is, the van will usually need a suspended bay or a permit during the zone's hours - they're on the street signs.
Congestion Charge and ULEZ
The Congestion Charge applies in central London, and the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) has covered all London boroughs since August 2023. Both apply to the vehicle, so ask each removal company whether its quote covers any charges on your route.
Flats and stairs
Flats above shops and in converted houses often have narrow stairs and no lift. Put the floor and the lift (or lack of one) in your online inventory so every company quotes for the real job.
Blocks of flats
Managed blocks often have rules for moves: a booked lift, a loading bay and set hours. Ask the building manager for both your old and new address.
How MoveFinder works for a London move
- Enter your postcodes. Start with your London postcode and where you're moving to.
- List your items online. Room by room, with stairs, lifts and parking at both ends. There's no home survey visit - companies quote from your inventory.
- Compare movers. See the companies that cover your area side by side. The Verified Partner badge means our team has checked that company's insurance documents, and every review says where it came from.
- Book online. Every customer's mobile number is WhatsApp-verified with a code, so companies know your enquiry is real. Prices can change until you book.
London removals: your questions
Do I need a parking suspension for a London move?
Often, yes - especially if your street is in a controlled parking zone or there's nowhere for a large van to stop. Apply to the borough council that runs the street as early as you can; councils need notice and charge for suspensions.
Who pays ULEZ or the Congestion Charge for the removal van?
Both charges apply to the vehicle, so they're for the removal company to pay or include in its price. Ask each company whether its quote covers them for your route.
Can I get London removal quotes without a home survey visit?
Yes. On MoveFinder you list your items online, room by room, and companies quote from that inventory, so nobody needs to come round to survey your home.
