Top tips for a smooth home move

A lot of moving-day stress comes from things that could have been sorted a few weeks earlier. These tips help you get them done in time.

1. Declutter before you pack

Everything you sell, donate or recycle is something you don't have to pack, carry or pay to move - and your inventory, and so your quotes, reflect what you're really taking.

2. Get your inventory right

Quotes are only as good as the details behind them. Go room by room, include the loft, shed and garage, and describe the stairs and parking at both addresses.

3. Book early for popular dates

Fridays and the end of the month are popular moving days, so book early if you need one - and keep your date flexible if you can.

4. Measure the big things

Measure sofas, beds, wardrobes and appliances, then the doorways, stairs and landings at your new home. It's much easier to plan for a sofa that won't fit than to discover it on the day.

5. Sort parking for the van

Check parking at both homes. If space is tight or there are parking restrictions, ask the council about reserving space for the van - councils need notice - and let your neighbours know.

6. Label boxes by room

Write the room and a short list of contents on each box. At the new home, put the same room names on the doors so the crew can carry everything straight to the right place.

7. Pack an open-first box

Kettle, mugs, snacks, chargers, toilet roll, medication, basic tools and bedding for the first night - packed last, unpacked first, and ideally travelling with you.

8. Photograph the wiring

Take a photo of the cables behind your TV, computer and router before you unplug them. Reconnecting takes minutes instead of an evening.

9. Get the fridge and freezer ready

Defrost the freezer a day or two before the move and dry it out. At the new home, check the manufacturer's guidance on how long to leave a fridge or freezer standing before you switch it on.

10. Plan for children and pets

Moving day is easier for everyone if young children and pets are looked after elsewhere, or settled in a quiet room away from the carrying.

11. Keep the important things with you

Keys, documents, valuables, medication and chargers should travel with you, not in the van.

12. Take meter readings

Photograph the gas, electricity and water meters at both homes on the day, so your final and opening bills are right.
